Sitia is a small town located in the eastern part of Crete in the prefecture of Lasithi at around 2 hours drive from the airport Heraklion. It is not as well know as the cities of Rethymnon and Chania but the area still offers a blend of history, natural beauty, and authentic Cretan experiences.

Here is a list of the top 5 things to do in and around Sitia:

1. Explore the Kazarma Fortress and The Port

Visit the 13th-century Venetian fortress overlooking Sitia and enjoy panoramic views of the town and coastline. There cultural festival from the beginning of July until mid August. Events include concerts of music, dance and theater, exhibitions of fine art and photography and many of those events take place at the fortress.

After exploring the fortress, make your way down to the port for a stroll along the waterfront, where local tavernas and cafes line the promenade.

Vai Beach is famous for its unique 2,000-year-old palm forest, which creates an exotic backdrop for beachgoers seeking both relaxation and adventure. Spend a day sunbathing on the golden sands, swimming in crystal-clear and exploring Europe’s largest natural palm grove.

3. Visit Toplou Monastery

Discover one of the most historically significant monasteries in Crete, the 15th-century fortified monastery of Toplou. Toplou has been repeatedly plundered by pirates, as well as by the Knights of Malta in 1530. It was destroyed in an earthquake before finally taking its current form during the 17th century.

When visiting don’t miss the impressive icon collection and the on-site museum as well as the win and olive oil tasting.

The best time to visit would be early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the many tours buses that make a stop there.

4. Hike the Zakros Gorge

Also known as the “Gorge of the Dead,” it takes about 3:30 hours if starting from the village of Zakro and offers stunning landscapes and leads to the ancient Minoan palace of Kato Zakros. It’s a perfect blend of nature and history.
